CorruptionTHE Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Mr Ekpo Nta, has urged members of state Houses of Assembly to instill good governance at the state and local government levels using their mandates as a legislature in fighting the war against corruption.

Nta spoke yesterday at the national capacity building workshop on transparency and accountability for house of assembly members in the South-South geo-political zone tagged: Transparency and Accountability: A Veritable Legislative Tool in Service Delivery, in Abuja.

Nta, represented by the Secretary to the Commission, Mr. Elvis Oglafa, explained that good governance must be applicable to all tiers of government, adding that “it is when there is good government that people will enjoy, there will be improvement in education, health sector etc.

I want to urge you to use your good offices to fight corruption, let us ask ourselves in the fight against corruption, what is the role of the legislature?”

The Provost, Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN), Prof. Sola Akinrinade explained that the programme was designed to ensure attitudinal change as a critical weapon in the fight against corruption.

Akinrinade, represented by the Deputy Commissioner, Education, ICPC, Mohammed Ashiru Baba, noted that for the ongoing of the federal government crusade against corruption to yield positive result, members of the legislative arm of government must be educated on corruption prone processes.

He said: “We are sure that our belief that our distinguished legislators will join the crusade to enthrone integrity in national public life is not misplaced.”

The Head of Programme, ACAN, Asst. Commissioner, Richard Bello, who doubles as a resource person at the workshop called for the domestication of the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act by state government to boost the war against corruption.
