Idumota market

Traders at the Idumota market on Lagos Island, yesterday, alleged that since the place got burnt, they had not received succour from either the federal or state government.

The traders disclosed this during a visit by the former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, to the affected area.

Recall that the market was engulfed in an inferno, which destroyed about 20 houses and 120 shops. Speaking on behalf of the traders, Oluwatoyin Dosunmu, said the state government told them that only persons with documents would be attended to, and that since the documents were submitted, the traders had not received any feedback.

The traders urged George to call on the federal and state governments to come to their aid, adding that many of them had become stranded.

“We appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to come to our rescue,” Dosunmu pleaded. Another trader, Olalekan Ajanaku, said since they had no other means of livelihood, they resorted to using makeshift stalls to display their wares, alleging that the state government had asked them to leave or face eviction.

George, who is also the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, assured the traders that he would impress the federal and state governments to help them return to their businesses. He also commended the traders for their patience.
