A governorship aspirant of the Labour Party (LP) for the November 11 election in Imo State, Basil Maduka, has denied being sponsored by the Lamidi Apapa faction of the party.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Julius Abure faction, Obiora Ifoh, had, on Tuesday, described Maduka as an agent of Apapa, who created a crisis in LP and sued the party up to the Supreme Court.
Ifoh said Maduka was one of the two aspirants who stage-managed Imo State governorship primary under the supervision of Apapa. But addressing journalists, yesterday, Maduka, who is a contestant in the LP primary for the Imo governorship election, insisted that he was not associated with any faction within the LP, particularly the one led by Apapa.
He described the claim as baseless, saying it was being spread in an attempt to tarnish his reputation and exclude him from participating in party affairs.
Maduka, who said he has been in the forefront of financing the party for a long time, added that he would ensure that the authentic candidate of the party, Athan Achonu, wins the November 11 election.
Recall that the Supreme Court had, last month, affirmed Achonu as the LP candidate for the governorship election in Imo.
