Imo PDP leader resigns, cites internal party crisis

A prominent leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and pioneer Commissioner for Technology Development in Imo State, Hon. Meekam Mgbenwelu has announced his resignation from the party.

In a letter addressed to his Ubulu ward Chairman and copied to his Oru West LGA and state chairmen respectively, dated 23rd February, 2026, Mgbenwelu said his decision resulted from what he described as the persistent institutional crisis within party across all levels.

He appreciated all those who had supported him and worked with him while he was in the party and wished the entire leadership and members of the party well.

The ex Imo Commissioner in the letter said, “I hereby formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP with immediate effect from 23rd February, 2026.

“The persistent institutional crisis within the party from the national level to the ward level and the consistent failure to uphold due process, the rule of law and equity have rendered continued membership untenable. The party’s current direction is fundamentally incompatible with the democratic values I hold.”

Meekam, while in PDP, served as the State Co-ordinator PDP Membership e-Registration Exercise, Spokesman for the Imo PDP Leadership cacus and a strong party leader in Oru West LGA.
