Imo State Police Command had rescued abducted Director of Dutch Global Gas Station Limited, Owerri.

The oil magnet (names withheld) and his friend were reportedly kidnapped on Wednesday by unknown gunmen along Akwakuma Road in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state.

The command spokesman, Micheal Abattam, in a statement, yesterday said suspected kidnappers, who operate in a Lexus jeep, were forced to drop the victims following a hot chase and pressure mounted on them by police operatives.

Abattam said the state Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Hussaini, was appreciative of efforts by his men on the incident, while urging residents to continually support the police in their determination to rid the state of all forms of crimes and criminality.

The statement reads in part: “On 27/10/2021 about 1255 hours, following a distress call that the Director of Dutch Global Gas Station Limited, had been kidnapped by five armed men who trailed, double crossed and blocked his vehicle, a G-Wagon jeep by a shop along Akwakuma Road in Owerri West, with a sky blue Lexus Jeep with registration number. While driving in company of his friend, they shot sporadically into the air, causing fear and pandemonium, which made passers-by to run for safety and in the process they forced the victims out of their vehicle and pushed them into their Lexus jeep and zoomed off.

“Immediately, the command’s tactical teams on patrol were alerted, they sped to the area giving the hoodlums a hot chase.  Joined by other tactical teams, the kidnappers on sighting their numbers and pressure mounted, felt threatened; hence, they abandoned their vehicle with the victims and fled into hiding. The victims were rescued unhurt and have since reunited with their families.

“The victim’s G-Wagon jeep was later recovered at the scene with three expended cartridges. While efforts are on top gear to arrest the fleeing suspects.

“The Commissioner of Police,  Rabiu Hussaini, while commending the officers and men for their gallantry, extolled Imolites for their cooperation and support, urging to them to continue to assist the police with credible information and report any suspicious person or activities seen within their neighbourhood to the nearest police station or call the Police command emergency numbers 08034773600 or 08098880197 in time of distress.”

MEANWHILE, the CP has arrested and detained four officers, who were accused on a viral social media report of extorting N60,000.00 from a traveller.

A viral report, which appeared on many platforms accused the police operatives of swooping on a Lagos resident, Victor Aguwah, who had flown in at the Sam Mbakwe International and Cargo Airport, Owerri, on his way to Mbaise, Imo State.

The report, with details of the officers and their vehicle, was posted on Wednesday morning, drawing attention of the Imo State Police Command to the incident, where the officers were accused by the traveller of collecting about N600,000.00 after searching his bag without finding any incriminating thing against him.

The report said, the officers allegedly forced him to transfer N60,000.00 from a Point of Service (POS) operator.

But the commissioner has assured that the outcome of  investigation and trial of the affected officers would be made public.

He also assured the victim and the public of the Command’s commitment to ensuring that no officer indicted over corrupt practices would be spared.
