To enthrone sanity in the transport and motor traffic management, Imo State government, yesterday, inaugurated uniformed Traffic Management Enforcement Team (ISTMA).

Performing the ceremony in Owerri, the Commissioner for Transport, Chief Rex Anunobi, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Ogunsanya Bimbola, said the team would be supervised by his ministry.

Anunobi, who said mobile courts would be constituted by the State Ministry of Justice to enforce compliance to the traffic rules and regulations, listed other members of the team to include some members of the Imo Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), who are to be deployed with Point of Service (POS) machines.

While directing the dissolution of other task forces in his ministry, which are connected to the Public Transit Vehicles (also known as Commercial Vehicles), the commissioner warned them to shun any form of corruption, extortion and harassment of the members of the public and road users.

He stressed that the team will also ensure closure of all illegal motor parks in Owerri municipality, in line with the directive of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s “Shared Prosperity” Urban Renewal Programme.

The commissioner described the team as worthy ambassadors, asked them to be diligent and honest in the discharge of their duties.

Anunobi said all the revenues arising from the fines should be paid into the Treasury Single Account (TSA), through IIRS officials, who would be on ground with the POS machines and receipts issued to the payees and defaulters.

The Permanent Secretary expressed the determination of the state government to restore sanity and discipline in the transport sector, urging “strict adherence and effective service delivery.”

Responding, Transport Public Vehicle Inspector, in the Ministry, Frank Uche, said the team  would operate within the ambit of their mandate.
