India drug bust: Nigerians among 25 suspects facing prosecution

Nigerian nationals are among 25 individuals facing prosecution in connection with a major drug trafficking operation uncovered in Hyderabad, according to the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB).

The suspects, according to a news report on etvbharat, are being investigated for their alleged roles in supplying cocaine and other narcotics through a courier-based distribution network linked to pubs, farmhouses, and elite consumers in the city.

The operation began with the arrest of Surya, manager of Malnadu Restaurant in Kompally, by the Cyberabad Narcotics Police. He was found in possession of OG weed, ecstasy pills, and cocaine concealed in various compartments of his vehicle, including a parcel box under the seat and the heel of women’s slippers.

During questioning, Surya reportedly admitted to purchasing drugs from multiple sources, including Nigerians identified as Jerry, based in Bengaluru, and Nick, whom he met during a trip to Thailand in May 2024 and who now resides in Delhi. Authorities said Surya transferred ₹80,000 to Nick’s account on July 4 for a cocaine consignment.

Further leads prompted the police to file cases against three Nigerian nationals — Dezmond, Stanley, and Prince — all of whom are alleged to have played a role in the broader trafficking network. Their involvement is being investigated alongside Indian nationals such as Rahul, Rohit Madishetti, Pawan, and Srideep, all of whom were reportedly linked to the purchase or distribution of drugs.

Surya told investigators that drugs were routinely used at upscale pubs including Prism, Farm Pub, Birdbox, Block 22, Quake Arena, Exora, and Broadway Pub. He also said parties at a farmhouse in Mulugu were a frequent setting for drug consumption, naming other associates such as Harsha, Navdeep Reddy, and a heart surgeon, Dr. Prasanna of Bhimavaram.

Police say the network used courier services to move drugs across cities. On Monday, a parcel containing narcotics was delivered to Surya via Srimaruthi Courier, confirming ongoing use of commercial couriers in the supply chain.

Investigators have so far booked 25 suspects and are working to track down others believed to be part of the distribution ring, which may extend to other cities in India. Officials said the Nigerians named in the case are under surveillance, and efforts are underway to arrest them for questioning and possible prosecution under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The TGANB and Cyberabad Police have not yet confirmed whether the Nigerian nationals are currently in custody. The investigation remains active, and further arrests are expected as authorities widen their probe into the international elements of the case.
