The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has inaugurated the State Technical Committee (STC) and the State Expatriate Monitoring Committee (SEMC) in Akwa-Ibom to tackle infrastructure failure.

The President of COREN, Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Abubakar said the move was part of COREN’s commitment to restructuring reform as well as set a standard for its operational framework.

While inaugurating members of the committee in Akwa Ibom, he said the aim was to strengthen collaboration with the government and the good people of the state.

“Our goal is to ensure that engineering practices adhere to global best standards, fostering sustainable development and excellence in the profession.

“This committee is a key organ for compliance and enforcement of all engineering related practices in the state, ” he said.

According to him,COREN is an agency entrusted by the Federal Government with the mandate to regulate the education, training, and practice of engineering in Nigeria.

He said that engineering regulation was the bedrock of the profession because it ensured that work done in the sector met global best practices and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Abubakar said that inaugurating the committee was crucial to achieving the goals and tasked them on global best practices.

He listed some of the committee’s mandates to include, engineering regulations monitoring and enforcement, technical and administrative oversight, and stakeholders’ engagement and advocacy.

Abubakar lauded the developmental strides of Gov. Umo Eno and thanked him for his collaboration and partnership with the engineering body.

The Chairman of the occasion, Mr George Okoroma, said the inauguration of technical committee was to ensure that engineering was taken to the grassroots with the highest level of monitoring.

Okoroma, who is also chairman of the COREN South South zone steering committee, expressed confidence in the selection process of the committee members.

He said that with their years of experience and in-depth knowledge gained, they would reposition COREN with new modalities that would bring durable infrastructure to the state.

The Chairman of the Planing Committee, Emmanuel Udang, commended COREN president for the initiative.

He called on the committee to initiate reforms that would strengthen and promote sustainable development in the state.

Responding on behalf of the committee, the Chairman of STC, Mr Uwen Akpan, assured the president and all stakeholders that he would raise the bar of professionalism.

Akpan also promised to ensure that engineering jobs were done by engineers in line with regulatory guidelines.

“We will make good use of the opportunity and partner institutions and government.

“We will also expand and consolidate on the mandate given to us, ” Akpan said.
