The National Assembly has called on Nigerians to rally behind the Armed Forces in the wake of the killing of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah and several soldiers during a recent terrorist attack in Borno State.
Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, made the call while reacting to the tragic incident in Benisheikh, describing it as a painful reminder of the sacrifices being made daily by troops on the frontlines.
Braimah and other soldiers were killed when insurgents attacked a military base in Nigeria’s North-East, a region that has witnessed sustained violence from extremist groups.
Agbese said the loss of the senior officer and his men underscores the urgency of strengthening national support for the military, stressing that the fight against terrorism and banditry requires collective commitment.
“The National Assembly stands firmly with our armed forces at this difficult time. We urge all Nigerians to unite behind them as they continue to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our nation,” he said.
He noted that Nigeria is currently grappling with complex and evolving security threats, including insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping, particularly in the northern parts of the country.
The lawmaker emphasised that the 10th National Assembly remains committed to providing robust legislative backing to enhance the operational capacity of the military and other security agencies.
According to him, this includes ensuring adequate funding, improving troop welfare, and strengthening intelligence and surveillance systems to effectively counter security threats.
Agbese also assured that lawmakers would intensify oversight of defence spending to guarantee transparency and ensure that allocated resources are efficiently utilised.
He commended the courage and resilience of troops who continue to confront insurgents despite mounting risks, describing them as patriots whose sacrifices must not be taken for granted.
The Benisheikh attack is part of a growing pattern of assaults on military formations in the North-East, with insurgent groups intensifying operations in recent months.
Agbese stressed that beyond government efforts, citizens have a critical role to play in tackling insecurity by providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
“The battle against terrorism is not for the military alone. It requires the active support and cooperation of all Nigerians,” he added.
He expressed optimism that with sustained collaboration between the legislature, executive, and the Armed Forces, the country would overcome its current security challenges and restore lasting peace.
The lawmaker further extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, noting that their sacrifice would remain a symbol of courage and national service.
