The Director of the National Education Summit, Professor Ambassador Adams Agahiu OON, has called on the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the bill seeking the establishment of state police in Nigeria as part of efforts to address rising insecurity across the country.
Speaking during an interview with our correspondent, Agahiu said the creation of state police would significantly strengthen efforts to combat insurgency, kidnapping, and other violent crimes affecting many communities nationwide.
According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has continued to demonstrate commitment toward restoring security through ongoing military operations and other strategic interventions aimed at curbing terrorism and extra-judicial killings.
He noted that state policing would enable local communities to better secure their environment because recruits from the states are more familiar with the terrain, culture, and movement within their localities.
“State policing is one of the best solutions for Nigeria’s security challenges because local recruits understand their environment and can easily identify suspicious activities before criminals strike,” he said.
Agahiu also alleged that some recent kidnappings involving teachers, students, and schoolchildren were politically motivated attempts to undermine the administration ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He, however, expressed confidence in the Federal Government’s resolve to tackle insecurity, stating that President Tinubu remains committed to defeating criminal elements and restoring peace across the country.
He warned criminal groups and their sponsors to desist from activities capable of threatening national peace and stability or face the full weight of the law.
The education summit director further commended delegates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for re-electing President Tinubu as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
He described the party’s presidential primary election held recently in Lagos as peaceful and orderly, adding that the outcome reflected broad support and acceptance of President Tinubu’s leadership within the ruling party.
