Research Fellow, Division of Strategic and Security Studies, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Sunday Olubejide, has explained that the country’s foreign policy is determined by domestic/internal or external/foreign factors.
He noted that for Nigeria’s foreign policy to be robust, her history must be stressed.
Other key domestic factors are existing policies, population, ethnic religious diversity and personality of leaders.
For external factors, Olubejide said issues like international organisations the nation affiliates to, globalisation, climate change, food security, poverty, democratisation and trans-national migration determine a country’s policy.
He spoke while delivering a lecture during a study-visit of final year students of Political Science, Lagos State University (LASU) to NIIA, Lagos.
Welcoming the students, Director General of the institute, Eghosa Osaghae, clarified that the institute deals with specialised units of research, matters of African unity, global trade, international law and diplomacy, peace and strategic studies, as well as trade and economic relations.
