While the rest of the world were in the World Bank Headquarters, Washington DC, fashioning out ways to procure funds to bail out their countries from the devastating economic effects of the Ebola Virus Disease, Sierra Leoneans were outside the building on each others throat over alleged embezzlement of Ebola free money and unconstitutional acts of removing the Vice President Samuel Sam-Sumana by President Ernest Bai Koroma.
Sierra Leone, alongside Guinea and Liberia, face a second Ebola shock. According to the Director General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Ms. Christine Lagarde, the recent sharp decline in commodity prices will significantly impair prospects for recovery. Many investors are considering delaying projects, while some operating mines have already suspended their activities.
“This highlights the crucial importance of supporting the post-Ebola recovery by providing additional concessional financing, ideally in the form of grants,” she said.
But as the fresh initiatives were ongoing, a group led by the National Coordinator of Concerned Sierra Leoneans, Mr. Mustapha Wai, demanded that President Koroma must account for the previous Ebola funds before more money is allocated. The other group, comprising members of the 21-man delegation of the country to the IMF Spring meetings, praised President Koroma’s effort. They hired a band to drown the voice of the dissident group, which in turn carried placard with various inscription raging from
‘Koroma is a thief’ to ‘where is Ebola free money?’
