IPOB hails Canadian court ruling allegedly declaring APC, PDP terrorist groups

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reacted to what it describes as a “significant ruling” by a Canadian court, which the group claims designates Nigeria’s major political parties—the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—as terrorist organisations.

In a press statement released on August 16, 2025, and signed by spokesperson Emma Powerful, IPOB described the reported decision as a “defining moment” and said it “marks a shift in global awareness of the situation in Nigeria, particularly with respect to allegations of human rights abuses and political repression.”

The group referenced the 1967–1970 civil war, stating that historical grievances continue to inform its pursuit of self-determination. IPOB emphasised that its operations remain non-violent and grounded in lawful, peaceful advocacy.

The statement also criticised past efforts by Nigerian authorities to proscribe IPOB, calling such actions “politically motivated,” and urged renewed international attention to the rights of indigenous communities seeking self-determination.

As of this report, there has been no independent confirmation of the alleged Canadian court ruling from Canadian judicial authorities. The Nigerian government, APC, and PDP have not issued official responses to IPOB’s claims.

IPOB has been proscribed by Nigerian authorities since 2017, a designation it rejects, insisting that it functions as a peaceful advocacy movement.
