The Olowu of Owu Kingdom in Abeokuta, Oba Saka Matemilola, has called on the Federal Government to urgently consider assigning constitutional roles for traditional rulers to make them more effective at restraining people from any unruly behaviour in their respective domains across the country.

Oba Matemilola made the call while fielding questions from journalists, yesterday, during a media briefing to mark second year anniversary of his ascension to the throne as Olowu of Owu Abeokuta and celebration of his 60th birthday anniversary held in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The monarch specifically premised his call on the inauguration of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council in Owerri, Imo State, where the President openly acknowledged that Nigeria would move forward with support of the royal fathers and traditional institutions.

He said that it is time for the Federal Government to urgently consider agitations for constitutional roles for traditional rulers at resolving conflicts through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) system, stressing that it will be much easier if they are constitutionally equipped to function maximally.

The Olowu, who spoke on the progress and development recorded within the past two years he assumed the throne, attributed the achievements recorded so far to the support his community received from all sons and daughters of Owu Abeokuta, particularly former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former governor of the state, IbikunleAmosun.

The achievements, according to him, included an unprecedented human capacity development and socioeconomic growth in education; social welfare; healthcare delivery, war against drug abuse through partnership with the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), community security, as well as the Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation (ADR&M) that have kept greater number of people away from prolonged and unresolved litigation.
