THE people of Bakare Jafojo, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos and whose houses were razed down by fire in June last year are calling on the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, to compensate the victims of the fire disaster.

In a statement signed by the Secretary of the Committee representing the interest of the 21 victims whose vehicles were destroyed by the explosion, Mr Ayodele Abiodun and his Assistant Secretary, Mr Omoniyi Aluko, the group noted that: “Life is yet to return to normal for the people whose vehicles were razed down during the Iyana-Ipaja tanker explosion and the inferno that rocked the area on June 4, 2015, during which houses and property worth millions of naira were destroyed.”

The group recalled that a day after the inferno, the Lagos State Governor visited the scene of the accident. “During his visit, the governor said the state government will quickly find a way to help those who lost property and shops during the inferno.

“We are appealing to the governor to remember his promise to put smiles on our faces just as he put smiles on the faces of the people whose houses and tricycles were damaged by the inferno by compensating them for their losses.”

The group added that some of the affected victims are commercial drivers, who depend on their vehicles to eke out a living.“The fact that virtually all of the victims are using third party insurance policy means that the insurance companies were not liable to compensate us for our losses either,” the group said.
