AFEEZ Jamiu and Fatimo Bello at the weekend emerged champions of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)/National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS) Open Table Tennis Championship held at the weekend at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

In the Men’s category, Jamiu defeated Azeez Sholanke 4-2, while Bello humbled Odusanya Abosede also 4-2 in women’s category. For their efforts, they were presented with cash prizes of N100, 000 each, while the runners up went home with N75, 000 each.

The joint third place winners in the Men’s Singles, Ayo Omoafar and Rilwan Akanbi and in the Women’s Singles, Aminat Fashola and Atinuke Olaide, each received N50, 000 as joint prize money.

Organiser of the event, the Lagos State Table Tennis Association, led by Architect Femi Sokoya, hailed the performances of the participants of the tournament, saying: “We had an exciting finals that produced outstanding winners in both the Men and Women’s singles.

“The association wants to use this kind of competition to keep our players busy because we should not let the tempo slow down, as Lagos is the home of table tennis in Nigeria. We will do more of this competition to also discover good talents in the sport as we look forward to the next National Sports Festival.”
