Jigawa government seeks aids for flood victims

The Jigawa State government has appealed to the Federal Government, donor agencies and individuals to come to the aid of flood victims.

Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Yusuf Sani Babura, made the call while speaking to newsmen at Warwade Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Dutse Local Council.

He said the flood occurred after three-day persistent downpour, which resulted in submerging many villages across all the 27 Local Councils.

Babura explained that the state government had established 13 IDP camps for the displaced victims.

“Presently, we have 13 IDP camps in different local councils and we are responsible for their feeding, education, health, and all other necessary needs.

“We will not return them to their villages, until water subsides. We will assist them with building materials to construct their houses and food to start with.

“In Warwade IDP camp alone, we have about 3,000 persons and we are still evacuating the victims from their villages into the other camps.

“Many people died, many were injured, many houses collapsed, roads were cut-off and farmlands were washed away,” he said.

He explained that the government was still accessing the damages caused by the flood all over the state to ascertain the number of victims and damages.

“We are seeking assistance from organisations, donor agencies, individuals, NEMA, refugees commission and the presidential committee on flood, as a matter of urgency, to assist the victims because the situation is beyond our control,” he declared.
