Jigawa govt spends over N863m on student scholarships

Jigawa State Scholarship Board has paid N863,869,779 out of N8 billion allocated to the board in meeting the payments of students’ scholarship allowances studying in both foreign and other tertiary institutions in different parts of the country, the Board’s Executive Secretary, Alh. Saidu Magaji, has disclosed.

Addressing a press conference in the board’s premises in Dutse, he said the sum of N533,798,522 was meant for the 2024/25 payment of scholarship for 195 foreign students as scholarship allowances, while the sum of N330,171,227 was paid to indigenous students studying in different tertiary institutions in the country.

According to him, this amount covered about 4,462 students who have gained admission and are studying in different tertiary institutions such as Bayero University Kano, FUD Dutse, Adamu Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, among others.

This year, the state government has approved the sum of N53,850,073 for 2,483 students studying in both the College of Education Gumel and the College of Legal Education Ringim. Out of the 790 numbered females, about N20,078,694.00 was paid for their registration, alongside their counterparts, 790 females of the College of Legal Education Ringim.
Similarly, the sum of N186,350 was paid to 44 students who are pursuing their Master’s and Doctorate Degrees abroad, out of which five were females, while 39 were males. Also, the sum of N516,147,090 was paid to 799 students, out of which 400 have gained admission in different tertiary institutions studying medicine, among other related science courses.

Furthermore, the sum of N6,990,000 was paid on 31 students studying medicine at Integral University, India. Out of the number, 30 are studying Nursing, while four are studying Medical Nursing.

Again, the sum of N2,880,760 was spent on four females currently studying medicine at Istikama University, Sumaila in Kano State. The amount covers their evaluation fees for their results, adaptation, among other services, where they were posted to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for their internship. It is expected they will be posted to some of our medical facilities for recruitment into the state’s civil service.
