The Catholic bishop of Sokoto diocese, Bishop Hassan Kukah, has lamented the appointment of people into public office based on ethno- religious considerations.

The Catholic bishop of Sokoto diocese, Bishop Hassan Kukah, has lamented the appointment of people into public office based on ethno- religious considerations.

He said such appointments encourage corruption, as institutions that should check graft in society fail to live up to their responsibility for fear of offending those in power.

He spoke, yesterday in Abuja, at the inaugural ceremony of Old Seminarians Association of Nigeria (OSAN), under the chairmanship of Femi Falana SAN, where he encouraged people not to be afraid of speaking truth to power in the interest of society.

“At the end of an event I attended, I walked up to President Jonathan to thank him for appointing my friend into a big office, I told him we were old seminarians. The president then asked me what I was doing with a ‘former seminarian.’

He said he did not know the man and was knowing about him for the first time,” Kukah said.He insisted that speaking truth to power, as is customary of Falana, was a way of putting political office holders under check.

Falana, who urged the public to continue holding government accountable, regretted that the nation was producing a generation of old convicts.

He lamented that the present generation is obsessed with such social vices as Internet fraud, insisting that parents must step up their guidance and counselling responsibility.
