Journalists with The Sun Publishing Company have urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to act on the petition submitted in their Lagos office over the unjustly confiscated of their land by some leaders in Arobieye Community in Ado-Odo-Ota Local Council of Ogun State.
The journalists alleged that the EFCC had failed to act on the petition submitted to its Lagos office over six months ago. In the petition to the EFCC Area Commander in Lagos State, dated March 30, 2024, captioned “Petition Against Nkem Nwokocha, former President of the Sun Cooperative Society Nigeria Limited,” the petitioners urged the EFCC to probe Nwokocha over the land they purchased at Arobieye community in Ado Odo Ota Local Council.
The journalists also alleged that two community leaders disobeyed the police and court order that directed them to main status quo. They accused the community leaders of selling the lands and encouraging people to build on them.
Meanwhile, Nwokocha, who is into real estate, has denied the allegation, saying that she handed over to the executives that succeeded her-led exco when she was leaving the office in 2013.
Nwokocha, who denied having knowledge of a petition against her, she said that she knew nothing and had no dealing on the land. She said: “I am not aware of the petition. It was during my excos that we bought the land. We handed over to executive members that succeeded us. Ever since 2013, I have since relocated to South East. I retired as an estate agent. I called one or two beneficiaries of the Sango land that are interested in selling their land because I had a client that wanted to buy.
“Agoma Chinwe was one of the persons that showed interest. I paid him part of the agreed amount but because of transfer limitation, I couldn’t send everything at once. So, I sent the surveyor there and that was how I got to know that they are already building on their land. Nothing concerns us. We disengaged from The Sun since 2013.”
It would be recalled that the journalists had earlier this year urged the Ogun State Government to call the community leaders to order over the encroachment of their lands.
They also called on the Olota of Ota, Oba Adeyemi Abdul-Kabir Obalanlege, to prevail on the Baale of Arobieye Community, Nurudeen Dada, to stop re-selling their lands.
However, they stated that despite visiting the EFCC for over three times, the agency has failed to take any action while they continue to suffer injustice in the hands of the land grabbers.
The journalists also accused some Ogun State officials in the Lands and Planning Ministry of complicity for giving building approval on a land under litigation.
