In a time where cultural identity is both contested and celebrated, KAFART 2024 emerged as a bold reminder of the stories that shape us. From November 15th to 17th, the city of Kaduna hosted one of Africa’s most compelling cultural showcases — the Kaduna Fashion and Art Exhibition (KAFART) — which returned for its fifth edition with the thought-provoking theme: “From Whence We Came.”
This year, the event once again cemented its reputation as a transformative space where art and fashion became vessels of memory and imagination, drawing creators, thinkers, and audiences from across Nigeria and around the world.
Founded by NYH Concepts, a Kaduna-based creative force, KAFART has steadily grown into Northern Nigeria’s leading art and fashion platform. The 2024 edition welcomed a diverse audience and participating creatives from Abuja, Lagos, Paris, Bamako, Dakar, Casablanca, Milan, New York, and more — all converging in Kaduna for a weekend of inspiration, dialogue, and cultural celebration.
At the core of this year’s edition was a compelling call to reflect on our past in order to better understand our future. The theme, “From Whence We Came,” resonated throughout the entire event, from the powerful artworks on display to the conversations it sparked about identity, ancestry, and belonging. Artists, designers, and performers drew on memory, history, and tradition to craft bold interpretations of cultural legacy, each work contributing to a larger narrative of rediscovery and affirmation.
The exhibition hall was alive with stunning art installations and visuals that explored heritage and symbolism with contemporary flair. Fashion designers captivated audiences with collections that wove indigenous materials and motifs into daring new silhouettes, while dancers, poets, and musicians moved crowds with performances that echoed the rhythms of our ancestors. Conversations flourished during panel sessions and impromptu gatherings, where creative minds reflected on the evolving role of art and fashion in preserving cultural knowledge and inspiring change.
One of the most compelling elements of this year’s exhibition was the visual art showcase, featuring an extraordinary group of artists whose work left a lasting impression. Buahari Sani Junaid, Adenine Frances, Wakrot Chinshaka, Precious Sambo, Ramatu Ibrahim, Nuhu John Gwamna, Makama John, and Mbaya Aisha were among the many who presented deeply moving and innovative pieces. Their contributions spoke to personal and collective journeys, honouring ancestral wisdom while pushing the boundaries of contemporary African art. Alongside many other remarkable talents, these artists are creating groundbreaking work and positioning themselves as leaders in the field, not only in Nigeria but on the global stage.
Over the course of three days, the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Hall at Murtala Square was transformed into a living, breathing tribute to African creativity. Each corner of the space radiated with the energy of cultural pride and artistic brilliance. KAFART 2024 did more than entertain — it inspired reflection, ignited conversation, and reminded us of the power of storytelling through visual and performative art.
As the curtains closed on this landmark edition, the message remained clear: to move forward, we must first honour where we come from. KAFART continues to be more than a showcase — it is a movement rooted in memory, driven by creativity, and committed to the celebration and preservation of African heritage.
With its eyes on the future, KAFART’s mission remains steadfast — to champion African voices, elevate artistic innovation, and position Kaduna as a vibrant cultural capital. The 2024 edition may have concluded, but the stories told and the conversations sparked will continue to echo far beyond the exhibition walls.
