A Kano-based pressure group, Coalition of Political Analysts and Democracy Protectors, has called for expedited litigation on the emirship dispute that is currently before the Supreme Court
Worried by the prolonged ruling on the legal case, the group argued that the ongoing suspense is fostering tension and causing division across the state’s affairs.
A senior member of the emirate, Aminu Baba DanAgundi, has challenged the ruling of the lower court that recognised Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th emir of Kano.
In the case already pending at the apex court, DanAgundi disputes the removal of the 15th emir of Kano, Alh. Aminu Ado Bayero, by the state government.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday in Kano, the group’s convener, Al-Amin Albarra, stated that Kano is engulfed in uncertainty, a fragile situation that could lead to chaos if not properly managed.
He noted that the dispute has persisted for over a year and has the potential to escalate into a full-blown crisis if not resolved swiftly.
The coalition leader expressed concern about the polarisation of Kano’s populace along ethnic lines and divided loyalties, which threaten common interests.
The coalition highlighted that the dispute is a constitutional issue that demands a clear and authoritative ruling from the Supreme Court.
They stressed that the court’s decision would bring clarity and certainty to the legal implications of the dispute and assist in preventing future conflicts.
