• Governor makes two new appointments
A Kano-based pressure group, Coalition of Political Analysts and Democracy Protectors, has called for accelerated litigation on the emirship tussle before the Supreme Court.
Worried about the prolonged ruling on the legal dispute, the group insisted that the continued suspense was rather provoking tension in the state.
A senior member of the emirate, Aminu Baba DanAgundi, had challenged the judgment of the lower court that recognised Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th emir.
In the pending case at the apex court, the plaintiff is challenging the removal of the 15th emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, by the state government.
Addressing a press conference yesterday in Kano, convener of the group, Al-Amin Albarra, stated that Kano “is impregnated with uncertainty, a delicate situation that could generate chaos if not properly handled.”
He recalled that the dispute had been raging for over a year and could escalate into a full-blown crisis if not managed promptly.
The coalition leader expressed concern over the polarisation of the people of the state along ethnic lines and divided loyalty to the detriment of the public good.
MEANWHILE, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the appointment of Dr Suleiman Wali Sani as the new Chief of Staff, Government House, Kano.
The approval was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, yesterday.
Sani, an accomplished medical doctor, policy expert and retired permanent secretary, brings over four decades of distinguished public service to the new role.
Until his latest appointment, he had served as Special Adviser to the Governor on Civil Service Matters.
Also, the governor appointed a decorated retired infantry officer with over 35 years of service in the Nigerian Army, Major-General Mohammed Sani (rtd.), who held several key command and staff positions and played critical roles in peacekeeping, conflict resolution and national security operations, as the new Director-General of Special Services at the Government House, Kano.
