TO ensure ethical media practice in the country, the Kano State government has expressed dissatisfaction over irregularities among some journalists, stressing the need to enforce that the press operates according to set standards.

Disclosing this to newsmen during a media chat in his office at the weekend, the state Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Mr. Mohammed Garba, emphasised the crucial role of the media in achieving a peaceful society.

Garba cautioned that hate speeches during campaigns in the last elections was a result of unethical practice in the media.

He further recalled the period of Rwandan genocide where thousands of lives were lost. “That really happened as a result of hate speeches being circulated by some sections of the media during the crisis. “

The commissioner, however, cautioned against media censorship, which he said could limit the freedom of the press.
