The Kano South Concerned Elders Forum has appealed to Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf to consider Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum as the next Deputy Governor of the state, citing the need for equity and inclusive governance.
The elders said Rurum’s appointment would not only strengthen the administration but also address what they described as decades of political imbalance against Kano South in the state’s leadership structure.
Their appeal followed the nomination of Rurum alongside Engineer Rabiu Suleiman Bichi and Murtala Sule Garo by a legacy group within the All Progressives Congress for the governor’s final consideration.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Chairman of the forum, Senator Masaud El-Jibril Doguwa, the group described Rurum’s nomination as a significant moment in the political trajectory of Kano South.
“For the first time in over 30 years, someone from the zone has come close to being nominated as Deputy Governor,” the statement read.
It explained, “Previous efforts by capable politicians from the area to attain the position did not materialise.”
The elders noted that Kano South, with its 16 local government areas, remains one of the largest senatorial zones in Nigeria, yet has continued to yearn for fair representation at the highest levels of governance.
They further commended Governor Yusuf for what they termed his “sense of fairness, justice, and inclusiveness,” expressing confidence that he would make a decision that reflects the diversity of the state.
The group described Rurum as “a grassroots politician, team player and approachable leader with a wide network across the state and beyond,” adding that he shares the governor’s vision for delivering democratic dividends.
