Kano targets N20b quarterly revenue, to prosecute tax defaulters

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf

Kano State Government has targeted to generate over N20 billion in revenue in the 2025 fiscal year as part of the state’s critical tax reform administration and revenue drive.

The projection however comes with the commitment to block all revenue linkages and renewed vigor to prosecute tax defaulters.

Executive Chairman of Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), Dr. Zaid Abubakar, hinted at the plan Saturday while addressing the State Executive Council and top government officials at a retreat held in Kaduna.

In a statement by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Kano Government House, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the KIRS boss clarified that the reform was not aimed at increasing tax in the state.
He, however, reminded that the government will begin next year to ensure compliance with tax regulations and strengthen efficient and effective revenue collection.

Dawakin-Tofa recalled how Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf relieved the immediate past chairman of the revenue service and appointed a new management team as part of administrative reform.

The restructuring of the revenue agency has already yielded significant improvement in the agency’s performance in the third and fourth quarters of 2024, he said.

Abubakar said Governor Yusuf will soon unveil a new model for tax collection and revenue generation.
The model is expected to substantially increase revenue generation for the next fiscal year and enable the administration to fulfill its campaign promises across various critical sectors of development.
