Kano TikToker Murja Kunya sentenced to six months over naira abuse

A Kano Federal High Court has convicted popular Kano TikToker, Murja Kunya, for naira abuse and sentenced her to six months imprisonment.

However, the six-month sentence came with the option of a ₦50,000 fine, Justice Simon Amobeda ordered on Wednesday.

Besides, the presiding Judge further directed the convict to lead a campaign against naira mutilation through her social media handles as an ambassador of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The social media influencer was arraigned in March 2025 by the EFCC for alleged naira mutilation during a social event attended at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano, where she was sighted spraying new naira notes, a criminal offense under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, Section 21.

Although Kunya pleaded guilty as charged, Justice Amobeda had faulted the evidence brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against the popular TikToker.

Justice Amobeda asked whether the EFCC was at the scene of the party where the defendant allegedly mutilated the legal tender, and also challenged the EFCC to produce the alleged ₦400,000 accused the defendant about as part of the evidence.

Although the EFCC admitted the alleged ₦400,000 exhibit was not in their possession, the court rejected the request of the EFCC to adjourn the matter to enable her to produce the exhibit.

The Guardian gathered that Kunya may opt for the option of a ₦50,000 fine as the process to perfect the settlement of the fine was commenced immediately after the court proceeding.
