Kano unveils N650b integrated plan to develop rural communities

Determined to integrate developmental plan beyond metropolitan centers, Kano state government on Tuesday unveiled a five years strategic frame accelerate growth across it rural communities.

Tagged 2026-2030 Kano Strategic Framework for Integrated Rural and Sustainable Community Development KN-SFIRCD, is committed to reduce rural poverty by 40 per cent in the next five years.

The document launch by the state Ministry of Rural and Community Development focus on seven pillars include Health; Education; Agriculture; Infrastructure (Water, Rural, Roads); Social Protection; Peace, Security and Governance and Climate Resilience.

Unveiling the policy document, Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, AbdulKadir Abdulsalam disclosed that the strategic document became pertinent to check growth developmental deficit across rural communities.

Abdulsalam worried that with over 55 per cent of Kano population residing in the 36 rural local government across the state, the dwellers have continued to experience multi-dimensional levels of poverty, infrastructure decay and weak service delivery.

The Commissioner opined the data driven plan which aligned with the Global Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) which also confirm with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Blueprint is intended to restore functional health, quality education, security and infrastructure in the rural areas.

According to him, the five years strategic plan will be financed with N650 billion, with 25 per cent each from local and state government and 50 per cent from Federal government monthly allocation and grant intervention with zero borrowing plan.

Emir of Kano, Muhamnadu Sanusi II, who applauded the ingenuity of the state government to accelerate economic development within the rural communities however advocated special focus on improving healthcare services with provision of qualified health workers and facility.

Sanusi, represented by Emir of Karaye, Alh. Mohammad Mahras, added that the strategic plan should also prioritize education, agriculture and employment opportunities for youth to reduce security threat in rural communities.

Unveiling the document, Governor Yusuf reiterated its commitment to inclusive rural and community development, stressing the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, development partners, the private sector and local communities to accelerate progress across the state.

Yusuf, who was represented by deputy Governor, Alh. Murtala Sule Garo commended the Ministry of Rural and Community Development for bringing together policymakers, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations, members of the private sector and community representatives to deliberate on issues critical to the advancement of rural communities.

According to him, rural and community development remains central to the state’s aspiration for broad-based economic growth, social progress and environmental sustainability.

“The prosperity of Kano State is closely linked to the strength, productivity and enterprise of our rural communities where agriculture, commerce and small-scale businesses continue to sustain livelihoods and contribute significantly to our economy,” he said.
