Murtala Sule Garo

By Bello Adamu

Recent political developments in Kano State have drawn considerable public attention and Opinions as conversations intensify around the possible impeachment of the current Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo. While the constitutional process remains firmly within the jurisdiction of the Kano State House of Assembly, the evolving political atmosphere has inevitably generated discussions about possible successors should the office eventually become vacant at the end of the process.

Within political circles across the state, a number of prominent names have surfaced in these conversations. Among those frequently Captioned are the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibrin Falgore; former governorship candidate Salihu Sagir Takai; and former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo.

Each of these political actors brings a distinct political background, network of alliances, and varying levels of influence within Kano’s dynamic and often complex political landscape. Yet, beyond the personalities involved, the broader issue revolves around experience, political reach, administrative capacity, and the ability to contribute to stability within governance and Politics.

Strengths and Political Realities of the Contenders

A closer examination of the individuals being discussed reveals a spectrum of political experience and influence, alongside certain considerations that may shape the decision-making process should the situation arise.

Jibrin Falgore, as Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, commands significant influence within the legislative arm of government. However, it is important to note that he only assumed the Speakership in 2023, making him relatively new in a leadership role and, by extension, less experienced in executive governance. While he enjoys visibility and institutional authority within the legislature, transitioning to the deputy governorship would demand a breadth of executive administrative experience he has not yet fully acquired.

Although he comes from the youthful class, Some political analysts argue that Falgore’s current position as Speaker provides him a strong platform to consolidate influence, build political alliances, and gain further experience—making it a more strategic suggestion that he sustains his legislative leadership role rather than immediately moving to the executive arm.

It is argued that he sustainance of the office of the speaker will Strethen the governance of Abba Kabir Yusuf, having known Falgore to be of questionable loyalty.

Salihu Sagir Takai is widely known in Kano’s political landscape, having previously served as a Commissioner in the state and later emerging as the governorship candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in the 2011 gubernatorial election, where he contested against Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. His political career and public visibility have made him a recognizable figure across various political blocs in the state.

However, while his political experience is notable, some observers point out that his long-standing presence in politics also raises questions about generational representation in governance excluding youth within the circle, which the opposition may take advantage of and campaign against in 2027.

In a political environment where youth inclusion and generational balance are increasingly emphasized, some analysts argue that his emergence could be perceived as sidelining the growing demand for youthful representation in leadership positions.

The Murtala Sule Garo : Within the ongoing discussions, Murtala Sule Garo presents a political profile that reflects both extensive grassroots engagement and substantial executive governance experience within Kano State.

Garo’s public service trajectory spans multiple layers of governance. In 2011, he served as Special Adviser to Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a role that provided him with early exposure to executive policy coordination and the broader workings of state-level governance.

He later served as Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, where he strengthened his grassroots political base while gaining practical administrative experience at the local government level.

Beyond his local government leadership, Garo was elected Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State. In that capacity, he worked closely with leadership across all 44 local government areas in the state, a role that significantly expanded both his political network and administrative reach.

His subsequent appointment as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for 7 years plus further deepened his engagement with grassroots governance structures and traditional institutions, both of which remain central pillars in Kano’s political and social stability.

In addition to these executive roles, Garo has played significant organizational roles within party politics and governance. He served as the Organising Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State in 2007 and later became the pioneer Organising Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, following the successful merger that produced the party in 2014. In these capacities, he was a key mobilizer and organizer, not only in his senatorial district of Kano North but also in Kano Central and south, demonstrating his capacity to engage and unite diverse political constituencies across the entire state.

Importantly, he also emerged as the Deputy Governorship candidate of the APC in Kano State during the 2023 general elections, a development that further elevated his statewide political profile. Beyond his experience, Garo’s youthful energy, political acumen, and ability to mobilize supporters across party lines provide a strategic advantage for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, enabling the administration to consolidate support not just within the APC base but also among wider political constituencies across the state.

Analyst argues that Another dimension often highlighted in Garo’s political approach is his measured and conciliatory style of engagement. In a political environment sometimes characterized by intense rivalry, his ability to maintain working relationships across different political actors has allowed him to remain relatively non-confrontational within Kano’s political space.

From a broader political perspective, some observers suggest that the emergence of a figure like Garo, with longstanding connections to multiple political networks, could strengthen Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s support and foster a more inclusive political atmosphere within the state.

Beyond Personalities

Ultimately, the debate surrounding who might occupy the office of Deputy Governor, should the situation arise remains speculative until constitutional processes reach their logical conclusion. The responsibility of the Kano State House of Assembly is to ensure that any proceedings are conducted strictly within the provisions of the law and in accordance with democratic principles.

Nonetheless, the discussions surrounding possible successors reflect a broader political reality: leadership choices during sensitive political moments often shape the stability, direction, and effectiveness of governance and the politics itself.

Kano’s political history has repeatedly demonstrated that the most effective leaders are those who combine administrative competence, deep grassroots understanding, and the ability to maintain constructive relationships across diverse political interests and traditional as well as religious classes.

If current developments eventually lead to a transition, the final decision will likely depend on which candidate best embodies these qualities while strengthening stability and continuity within Kano’s evolving political landscape.
