Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State has approved the release of N188.5 million for the payment of teachers’ salaries.
Alhaji Isyaku Bello, the Secretary, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), disclosed this on Wednesday in Katsina in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that the teachers who were owed seven months’ salary arrears were recruited in May, 2015 by the immediate past administration.

Bello said that the board screened the teachers, and 620 were qualified to continue with their teaching as they have teaching qualifications.

“One hundred and thirty persons were recruited without teaching qualifications, as most of them possessed diplomas in Mass Communications, Law, Civil and Electrical Engineering.

“The state government has directed the board to terminate their appointments,’’ he said.

Bello said that the board was in dire need of more teachers with the required teaching qualifications, and had submitted the request to the state government for consideration.

The secretary said that the board had introduced new strategies that would boost teaching and learning in the state`s primary schools.
