Katsina LGA expends N84m to tackle water scarcity

Sandamu Local Government Area of Katsina State said it spent N84 million to tackle water scarcity challenge bedeviling the area for over a decade.

Chairman of the area, Usman Nalado, who stated this in an interview with newsmen, said the investment was made over a period of three years, since he assumed office.

Nalado said before now, the scarcity problem forced residents to look for water from sources that were not clean, often resulting in water-borne diseases.

He said one of the water projects with capacity of pumping more than 500,000 gallons daily, was commissioned last year amidst celebration by residents.

He said his eight boreholes were also constructed at strategic locations in the council, to ease long distance trips to get the community elsewhere.

Nalado also said more than 120 teachers have been recruited to boost the teaching-learning process in schools, especially for primary school pupils.

He added that 40 additonal classrooms were constructed by his administration to complement existing ones, and ensure adequate learning space for pupils and students.

He said an Information Technology (IT) library was also provided by his administration to boost learning amongst school-going children in the area.

He said a chalk-making factory which had been dormant for years, had been revived with the chalk being used by teachers to teach in classrooms.

The chairman said over 1,000 women received vocational training and were given cash assisted to enable them become self-reliant.

Nalado also said his administration ha been able to construct and put four hospitals to use, with frequent supply of medicines to boost healthcare delivery.

He commended the governor Dikko Radda-led administration of timely release of funds that had enabled the council area execute projects.
