A United Kingdom-based Pan-African clean energy infrastructure development and asset management company, GENESIS Energy Holding, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Katsina State government for a $500 million investment in clean energy development.
The agreement marks a pivotal step in bridging the energy gap in the state through sustainable energy infrastructure that would promote the development, financing and execution of a series of major energy infrastructure projects across Katsina.
According to firm, the projects aim to enhance power access, foster industrialisation, and contribute to the socio-economic advancement of the state. The MoU outlined a strategic framework for the collaborative development, construction, operation, and long-term maintenance of these projects, providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to power key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and industry.
At the signing, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda emphasised the partnership’s significance in unlocking the state’s economic potential and improving the quality of life for residents.
He described the deal as a major milestone in the state’s energy transition agenda.
“This MoU represents a major milestone in our ongoing efforts to build resilient infrastructure that will not only address Katsina’s immediate energy needs but also lay the foundation for a prosperous and greener future for generations to come. The first of the series of projects being constructed under this partnership will shortly be commissioned before the end of April 2025,” he said.
The governor added that the partnership is a step towards providing reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly power solutions, fostering economic growth, and attracting investments to the state.
The collaboration, according to the duo, aligns with the Nigerian government’s broader goals of energy security, sustainability, and economic diversification.
With power supply remaining a major challenge in many regions, the GENESIS-Katsina collaboration presents an opportunity to redefine energy access and boost productive economic activities.
Chairman and CEO of GENESIS Energy, Akin II Omoboriowo, echoed the governor’s optimism, stating that the company was fully committed to delivering impactful and scalable clean energy projects that align with Africa’s development goals.
He said: “Lighting Up Africa is more than just a vision for GENESIS; the heartbeat drives us. We are committed to enduring the rigorous process of developing and financing projects to bring sustainable energy solutions to the continent. For GENESIS Energy, this marks a significant milestone as we continue to actively partner with Katsina State in achieving energy independence, creating a pivotal opportunity to industrialise the state and position it as a major player in clean and renewable energy generation.”
