Military reaffirms commitment to insurgency
Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central Senatorial District of Kebbi State, has called for the declaration of emergency on insecurity in the country.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on the recent speedy screening and confirmation of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieut. Gen. Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, by the Senate and House of Representatives, Aliero submitted that Nigeria was technically in a war emergency, hence it required immediate military upgrade to enable security forces to carry out more massive onslaughts against terrorists and non-state actors behind mayhem in the country.
The lawmaker stressed the need to prioritise an immediate increase in the military workforce, and a rapidly revised approach to existential threats to national peace, unity and stability.
IN the meantime, the COAS has tasked troops of Joint Task Force Northeast Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) and traditional rulers to end Boko Haram terrorism in the northern region.
Oluyede gave the charge at the weekend when he visited the Theatre Command of OPHK at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, Borno State.
Addressing officers and soldiers, he said he was in Maiduguri to interact and get first-hand information on their welfare and the challenges of ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the region.
The general clarified that the visit was to provide solutions and boost the morale of officers on the front lines of Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad region.
In his brief response, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin Ibn El-Kanemi, assured the military officer of full cooperation.
He lamented the killing of 54 district and ward heads, including his family members, during the over one decade-old insurgency in the state.
