Kebbi NULGE rallies support for LG autonomy, abolition of joint account

Kebbi State chairman of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Umar Sadiq, has called on state governors and other stakeholders to support local government autonomy and the abolition of local governments’ joint account with states.

Making the call on Wednesday at the celebration of NULGE at 40 in Birnin-Kebbi, the state capital, he said that the abolition of the joint account would bring changes to the councils.

NULGE was established through the Trade Union (amended) degree No. 22 of 1978.

Umar, who said that the aim of the rally was to celebrate NULGE’s 40th anniversary, noted that the union had assisted councils’ staff and promoted unity among the members.

“We are fighting for our right, which is local government autonomy, and we want people to support us by fighting this goal,” he added.

According to Umar, abolition of the joint account will ensure that allocation to each council is paid directly to it without interference from the state government.

“We state clearly that NULGE, since its inception 40 years ago, has directed its efforts towards repositioning the councils for effective service and people-oriented programmes that have yielded positive results,” he added.
