The President of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr. Dele Olaitan Abdullahi, has confirmed that Dr. Ganiyat Popoola of the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was still alive in spite of her non-release by her abductors since December 27, 2024.
Abdullahi, who spoke with The Guardian in Ilorin on Thursday night on the sidelines of the dinner in honour of the Medical Graduands from the College of Medicine, University of Ilorin, said divine intervention and more potent drives by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, could fast-track her release from the den of the abductors.
He said: “I think the family of our colleague has someone who networks with the abductors. Recently, they brought to us the report that they spoke with her via telephone.
“We have done what is humanly possible. Money had been paid, running into several millions of naira. We embarked on strike to press for her release. All these efforts have not worked out well. The situation remains the same. We are now looking up to God’s intervention and more of the efforts of the NSA.”
He applauded his colleagues for their efforts at rescuing Popoola, just as he urged her husband and the children to remain strong and hopeful, adding that the entire nation is solidly behind them at this critical moment in their lives. Abdullahi could not confirm if the victim was being used as a doctor by her abductors.
Besides, he denied allegations in some quarters that her family members and friends could not raise the ransom demanded by the kidnappers, thus causing her continued detention.
Popoola’s husband and the children were released on March 8, 2024, leaving only her at the mercy of the abductors. The NARD president disclosed that the NSA and his networking team and other paramilitary and military groups were working round the clock “to ensure that our colleague is not only released but left unhurt.”
