• Wada Sues For Peace
AHEAD of today’s supplementary governorship election in Kogi State, the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) office in Dekina local council of the state has been razed by suspected arsonists.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Hussaini Halilu Pai, confirmed the incident yesterday in Lokoja.
He explained that the Commission had sent another batch of election materials to the area while the electoral office has been re-located to a makeshift office in readiness for the supplementary election.
Pai indicated that the Commission was not debarred, as it would go ahead with the conduct of the supplementary election as scheduled.
He described the arsonists as “anti-democratic elements”.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations, Mr S. O. Awoniyi, who also confirmed the incident, said “some persons suspected to be arsonists set the electoral office ablaze at 2:00a.m this morning and escaped arrest.”
Spokesman of Kogi State Police Command, Mr William Aya, said the Police was carrying out investigations into the incident, adding that the Divisional Police Officer in the locality has deployed anti-riot mobile policemen to the area to make arrests and establish the extent of destruction to electoral materials and the office building.
Meanwhile, the State Governor, Idris Ichala Wada yesterday cautioned the citizens of the state to maintain law and order.
In a statewide broadcast, the Governor asked the people of the state to refrain from taking laws in their hands, saying law enforcement agents would not hesitate to deal with trouble perpetrators.
