The Nigeria Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders Council Worldwide on Monday praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for removing Mele Kyari as Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), describing the decision as “long overdue”.

In a statement jointly signed by its President General, Comrade Terry Obieh, and National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the group said Kyari’s dismissal was in line with their long-standing call for reform at the national oil firm.

The group noted it had repeatedly urged President Tinubu to relieve Kyari of his duties, citing alleged opacity and inefficiencies in NNPCL operations.

Reacting to the decision, the council said the move would enable an independent audit of the company’s finances and contractual obligations.

“There have been various cover-ups within NNPCL — even crude oil yet to be produced has reportedly been mortgaged,” the group said. “The so-called rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries was another ruse by the Kyari-led management, with little to show on the ground.”

“Though belated, we commend Mr President for eventually taking this crucial step in the national interest. What must follow now is a full-scale, external audit of the NNPCL. No individual or entity should be exempt.”

The youth leaders also urged the newly appointed Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr Bayo Ojulari, to prioritise transparency and public service in repositioning the company.

“You must make the NNPCL truly serve Nigerians. Implement reforms that will transform the corporation’s outlook,” the statement read. “Given your experience and track record in the oil industry, we believe your appointment can bring about the much-needed stability in the sector — ultimately leading to more affordable fuel prices for citizens.”
