Labour minister urges Reps to expedite passage of labour bills

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Dingyadi, has urged the House of Representatives to fast track the passage of several critical labour bills.

The bills under consideration include the Labour Standards Bill, Collective Labour Relations Bill, Occupational Safety and Health Bill, Labour Institutions Bill and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund Act, 2010, National Directorate of Employment Act 2004, the National Productivity Act 2004, and the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies Act.

The minister made this appeal at the Inaugural National Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda of the House in Abuja.

While speaking, he said that these bills will align Nigeria’s labour laws with international standards, reposition Nigeria’s Labour Administration System, create an enabling environment for robust investments, enhance productivity and aid the country to attain social justice.

“The Ministry’s mandates, which includes enforcement of Labour Laws and implementation of policies in the areas of terms and conditions of employment, employment and job creation, occupational safety and health, protection of workers’ rights and vocational skills, are critical for national growth and development,” said Dinyadi.

“It is in this regard that I make a passionate plea to the House of Representatives to partner with the Ministry to facilitate the speedy passage of the National Labour Bills which will be brought before the House in a short while from now.”
