The Labour Party has adjusted the timetable for its primary elections, moving all previously scheduled exercises for May 27 and May 29 to Saturday, May 30.
The party’s spokesperson, Ken Asogwa, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, noting that the earlier dates would no longer stand.
Originally, governorship and state assembly primaries were billed for May 27, while presidential and National Assembly primaries were slated for May 29.
Under the new arrangement, all contests for President, Governor, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly will now be conducted on the same day.
“Consequently, all primaries for the offices of President, Governor, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly will now hold simultaneously on Saturday, May 30.”
According to the party, the decision became necessary because the earlier schedule clashed with two significant national observances.
The statement explained that May 27 coincides with the 2026 Eid-el Kabir celebration, while May 29 marks the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected officials across the country.
“In consideration of the spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration and the national importance of the May 29 anniversary, the Labour Party has rescheduled these dates.”
The party added that it sought to ensure members, aspirants, and supporters have adequate time to participate in both national events without conflict.
“As a people-oriented and responsive political party, we deemed it appropriate to adjust the schedule to enable members, aspirants, supporters and Nigerians generally to fully observe these important occasions.”
It also expressed regret over any inconvenience caused by the shift, while thanking stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation.
