The Labour Party has welcomed the passage of the State Police Bill by the Senate describing the move as a bold and patriotic step towards addressing Nigeria’s growing security challenges.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party commended the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, for the speed and commitment demonstrated in considering and passing the constitutional amendment bill recently transmitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the party, Nigerians across the country’s six geopolitical zones have long demanded a more responsive and effective policing structure capable of tackling the increasingly complex security threats facing the nation.
The Labour Party acknowledged concerns raised by some stakeholders about the potential abuse of state police by governors, citing experiences with State Independent Electoral Commissions and allegations of political interference. However, it argued that the country’s security realities make a strong case for a decentralised policing framework.
The party expressed confidence in the constitutional safeguards contained in the proposed amendment, particularly provisions in Section 17, which it said provide mechanisms to ensure accountability and prevent misuse of state police structures by state executives.
“The Labour Party is particularly encouraged by the constitutional safeguards embedded in the amendment Bill, especially the provisions contained in Section 17, which establish clear mechanisms to prevent abuse and ensure accountability in the operation of state police,” the statement said.
It further noted that while no policing model is flawless, the limitations of Nigeria’s current centralised policing system underscore the need for innovative approaches to improve security and law enforcement outcomes.
With the bill now awaiting approval by state Houses of Assembly before it is forwarded to the President for assent, the party called on governors and lawmakers across the 36 states to support the reform in the interest of national security.
The Labour Party maintained that, with proper oversight, transparency and strict adherence to constitutional provisions, state policing could become an effective tool for combating crime, strengthening community security and deepening Nigeria’s federal system.
