NIGERIA Labour Congress (NLC) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that the billions of dollars swollen from the national treasury by corrupt politicians and public officials is returned to government coffers, insisting that the anti-corruption probe should be extended to the power sector, Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and other sectors of the economy.

NLC President, Mr. Aliyu Wabba, said that the on-going probe of the Dasuki arms deal by the Federal Government has shown that, “there is need for the probe of the power sector, NNPC and all other critical agencies of government and those who defrauded this country should be made to return the illegally acquired funds. They should also be prosecuted and jailed.”

Wabba was among the dignitaries who attended the 40th Day Fidau prayers of the wife of the NLC chieftain, the late Hajiya Hamdalat Abiodun Aremu, where he condemned the activities of unpatriotic corrupt politicians and other Nigerians who collude to loot the nation’s treasury.

“The NLC has been in full support of the government over the investigation and prosecution of those who defrauded the nation, and particularly under the arms funds saga. We expect the dragnet of the anti-corruption agency to cover the NNPC, power and other vital sectors. All those who stole and make life uncomfortable for Nigerians must face the wrath of the law and we are 100 percent behind Buhari in this anti-corruption crusade, those who rob the country should be dealt with.”

The Secretary General of the Textile Workers Union of Nigeria, Issa Aremu, while praising the qualities of his deceased wife, said that, “my wife would certainly have been excited to read that in this year’s budget, President Buhari has set aside some N500 billion as direct social transfers or conditional cash transfer programme for the poor and most vulnerable.”

“The conditional legitimate transfers should serve as the basis for a national comprehensive social security for Nigeria. It is a worthy investment in the country’s human infrastructure (not stomach infrastructure) and it is as important as investment in physical infrastructure.”
