The Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Muibi Alade Folawiyo, has assured residents of adequate alternative means of transportation to address the security threat posed by commercial motorcyclists.

He described the ban on commercial motorcycle operations by the Lagos State Government as a welcome development.

Recall that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who announced the ban, listed Lagos Island as one of the six local councils, where operations of Okada riders were banned.

The others are Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos and Apapa, while the ban took full effect on June 1.

Reacting to this development, Folawiyo said the government cannot afford to allow the menace created by the Okada riders to fester.

While urging the commercial motorcyclists to fully comply, he warned that disobedience to the governor’s directive would be met with stiff penalties.

The council boss also implored the youths to resist any attempt by the Okada riders to drag them into a confrontation with the government, stressing that the ban on Okada operations is for the common good of the society.

He said: “We fully support Mr. Governor’s directive on Okada ban. Lagos Island is a cosmopolitan city that deserves a model transportation system.

“The untoward activities of Okada riders need to be put under control. We cannot allow lawlessness to become an order in our council. We want a council that is free of the shenanigans of Okada riders.”
