Lagos State Government, yesterday, flagged off the distribution of food items that included rice, beans and garri to some selected residents with the target of reaching 500,000 homes.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said he was deeply aware of the challenges Lagos residents had been facing with regards to the increase in transportation fares and the prices of essential food items across the state as a direct effect of the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.
“The strategic goal of this programme is to reach 500,000 vulnerable households in the state with staple food items using two methodologies – bulk food items (50kg rice, 50kg garri and 100kg beans) for groups, and food boxes (10kg rice, 5kg garri, and 5kg beans) for individual vulnerable households.
“The distribution of the food items to vulnerable households will be done through groups, institutions, non-governmental organisations, community development committees, among others.”
Similarly, Delta State Government has commenced payment of N10,000 and promotion arrears of over N5 billion to civil servants with effect from August 2023.
Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, who disclosed this, yesterday, in Asaba, said the payment was to commence implementation of various palliatives lined up to ameliorate the suffering of citizens, following the removal of petrol subsidy.
Emu further said that the state government had almost concluded plans for production of Tricycles (Keke) that are fuel and gas compatible, saying that upon completion, they will be distributed to the three senatorial districts to reduce cost of transportation for the people.
He said the employment of primary school teachers and non-teaching staff are ongoing across 23 out of the 25 councils of the state, adding that “this will further provide employment, reduce dependency and enhance learning for our pupils.”
The SSG, who had earlier announced the setting up of the state subsidy palliative committee to supervise the distribution of the palliatives, said sub-committees at both the council and ward levels would be set up for effective and near seamless distribution of the support items across the 25 councils.
