THE Lagos State Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, at the weekend kicked-started the 2015 Community Day Celebration, as laid down by the United Nations, to appreciate and encourage Community Development Associations (CDAs), in development activities of the state.

According to the Commissioner, Muslim Olohuntele Folami, the annual event, which started on Thursday with a Press Conference, will bring together over 3,240 CDAs in the state, as they join communities all over the world to celebrate the event.

He noted that this year’s theme: “Community Development: Tool For Sustainable Development”, was carefully chosen, as it tallies with the state community based development approach in practice.

While noting that the ministry had set up various committees that will carryout different assignments to ensure hitch free celebration, he said the assessment committee received 247 self-help projects and had already gone round to all CDAs in the state to assess various self-help projects executed in their respective communities.

“15 projects have been selected as the best CDAs’ intervention projects, for support by the state. The criteria for award of cash and material prizes to deserving communities include, the cost of the project, number of beneficiaries and users, as well as sustainability elements. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode will give prizes at the ceremony.”

A Jumat service was held on Friday, while Health walk/Health walk was held on Saturday. The ministry will pay visit to charity home on Tuesday, November 10, while communities’ parade/grand finale is scheduled for Thursday, November 12 at the Police College Ground, Ikeja.
