The Lagos State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral video showing the gathering of a group of men, suspected to be hoodlums by residents in the Lekki area of the state.
In a statement issued on his official X account on May 14, 2025, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said investigations confirmed that the individuals were workers brought from Katsina State to Lagos by a contractor for employment at the Dangote Refinery.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, showed the men assembled outside the premises of Dano Company in the Ibeju-Lekki area.
According to Hundeyin, officers from the Command visited the scene to verify the claims. “Preliminary investigations revealed that the young men in question, eighty-nine (89) in number, had arrived from Katsina State and were recruited to work as labourers at the Dangote Refinery in Lekki,” the statement read.
The contractor who brought them appeared before the police and confirmed he personally sourced the labourers for legitimate work at the refinery. This information was also confirmed by the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the refinery, who stated that the workers were verified and cleared for entry into the facility, where they would also reside.
Hundeyin added that the workers were searched, and no prohibited items were found in their possession. They also presented their National Identification Numbers (NINs), which were verified.
Reacting to the public concerns, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olorundare Jimoh, urged residents to go about their lawful activities, stating that there was no cause for alarm.
“Members of the public are advised to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified or alarmist content that could create unnecessary tension or panic,” Hundeyin said. “The Command remains committed to maintaining law and order across Lagos State and will continue to respond promptly to all matters relating to public safety.”
