Motorists across Lagos State have been placed on notice as law enforcement authorities are set to begin a major enforcement exercise targeting vehicles with covered, concealed, defaced, or missing number plates starting Monday, June 15, 2026.
According to the directive, vehicles found violating number plate regulations risk being stopped, impounded, and subjected to further investigation by relevant authorities.
The move is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security, improve vehicle identification, and curb criminal activities often linked to the use of unregistered or improperly identified vehicles. Security agencies have repeatedly expressed concern over the growing trend of motorists deliberately covering their number plates or driving without valid registration plates, making it difficult to track vehicles involved in traffic violations and criminal incidents.
Residents and motorists are therefore advised to inspect their vehicles and ensure that their number plates are properly displayed, clearly visible, and not obstructed by tinted covers, decorative materials, mud, or any object that could prevent easy identification.
The enforcement exercise is expected to affect private vehicles, commercial buses, trucks, and other categories of road users operating within Lagos State.
Authorities have urged the public to comply with traffic and vehicle registration regulations to avoid sanctions, vehicle impoundment, or other legal consequences.
Motorists are encouraged to share this information with friends, family members, and colleagues to prevent unnecessary inconvenience as the enforcement operation commences.
Effective Date: Monday, June 15, 2026
