Lagos To Sanction Private Schools Aiding Exam Malpractice
IRKED by the unbecoming level of examination malpractice going on in some private schools in Lagos State, the state’s Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Education, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule, has promised to sanction any school found to be assisting students to engage in examination malpractice.
The Deputy Governor, who said this during a meeting with proprietors of private schools in Lagos yesterday, revealed that some private schools had been indicted by examination bodies, including the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations council (NECO) for examination malpractice.
The Deputy Governor charged the teachers to be disciplined, adding that Lagos State Government would no longer tolerate any school promoting sub-standard education in Lagos.
The Deputy Governor also revealed that government would come up with census of private schools to know the actual number of schools in the state, noting that some schools only come for name search and thereafter start operating without completing the process.
Adebule said the state’s policies on education were being reviewed, noting that as part of the process the Office of Education Quality was being split into two for efficiency and effectiveness.
She added that it was important for the government to ensure effective regulation of the sector. She also advised the school owners to engage professionals to run their schools, warning that government would not hesitate to close down any school not run by educational professionals.
Some of the school owners who spoke complained of multiple taxations, a complaint which the Deputy Governor promised to look into.
