Lagos warns against prank calls to fire service

The Lagos State Government has stated that making false alarm, including prank calls to the state fire and rescue service, poses danger to the society .

According to the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, out of 1,952 incident calls received by the state in 2024, 578 were false alarm.

Oyer8nde made this known during the 2025 Annual Staff Engagement of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in Ikeja, Lagos State on Thursday,

The commissioner, who was represented by a director in the ministry, Olumide Williams, noted that “While firefighting is critical, it is the proactive measures of fire safety education and risk reduction that truly save lives and minimise damage.”

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Sesan Ogundeko, said “fake calls remain one of the challenges we are facing at the command and control centres, and it is also affecting the performance of the fire service. It sometimes leads to unnecessary wastages. It amounts to a waste of resources.

“Our warning is that the law is very clear on this; whoever is caught will face the full wrath of the law. We want to advise those involved in such acts to desist from it,” Ogundeko warned.

Earlier speaking, the Director of the fire service, Margaret Adeseye, revealed that the staff engagement which holds annually provided an avenues to deliberate on the way forward fir the agency.
