The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced a statewide ban on the movement of goods on regulated public buses, warning that strict sanctions will take effect from June 1, 2026.
The agency said the decision followed increasing complaints from commuters and operational challenges caused by the growing use of public buses for transporting goods and heavy loads across Lagos State.
According to LAMATA, the practice has continued to affect passenger comfort, compromise safety, and reduce the efficiency of transport services within the state.
The directive was reached after a strategic meeting between LAMATA and heads of operations and maintenance of bus operating companies. At the meeting, stakeholders reportedly agreed that the transportation of goods on regulated buses must be halted and reorganized to ensure a more balanced and sustainable transport system.
LAMATA stressed that enforcement of the directive would be strict and uncompromising.
The authority warned that any bus driver caught conveying goods during the suspension period would face immediate dismissal and blacklisting.
It also stated that any ground staff, terminal official, or LAMATA personnel found aiding, permitting, or facilitating the loading of goods onto regulated buses would be summarily dismissed without exception.
Reaffirming its commitment to restoring order, safety, and efficiency in the public transport sector, LAMATA urged commuters, transport operators, and terminal officials to comply fully with the directive and make alternative arrangements for the movement of goods.
The authority added that the measure forms part of efforts aimed at delivering a safer, more reliable, and commuter-focused transportation system for Lagos residents.
