Says it empowered over 12,000 MSMEs with N8.4b in four years
Lagos State Government, yesterday, said that in the last four years, it had invested over N8.4 billion to support more than 12,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises, showcasing their steadfast commitment to fostering an economy where businesses can thrive and no one is left behind.
The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who disclosed this during the 2025 Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI), organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to empower micro, small and medium enterprises, stated that additional 1,700 dedicated individuals, women, men, and youth are being empowered at the eventwith essential tools, equipment, and cash grants to boost their businesses.
He, however, reiterated his administration’s commitment to fostering an environment where every resident, particularly women, youths, and aspiring entrepreneurs, can achieve their business aspirations.
He emphasised that the MESI programme is a crucial component of the government’s strategy to empower women and alleviate poverty by developing thriving micro-enterprises.
“When we uplift one entrepreneur, we uplift an entire family, a whole community, and ultimately, the future of Lagos. The positive impact of your success will resonate in every market, every neighbourhood, and every home.
“This year, we are significantly increasing funding, focusing on crucial skills development, and enhancing support specifically for women-led businesses,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu, who underscored the ripple effects of empowering entrepreneurs, said that over the past four years, his administration had invested over N8.4 billion to support more than 12,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises, demonstrating a consistent commitment to inclusive economic growth.
He said that the support goes beyond mere start-up capital, but is aimed at unlocking potential, restoring dignity, and opening doors to brighter and more prosperous lives.
The governor, therefore, urged them to utilise the opportunity wisely, grow their businesses, create jobs, and support others in their communities. He, however, stressed the importance of unity, teamwork, and a shared vision for the continued progress of the state.
Meanwhile, the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Cecilia Dada, who highlighted the enduring impact of the MESI programme in transforming lives and strengthening communities, said that the initiative had directly empowered thousands of people through the provision of equipment, training, and start-up capital.
She passionately urged the beneficiaries to utilise the resources responsibly, invest wisely, and avoid selling the provided items. Dada also expressed profound gratitude to the governor for his visionary leadership and unwavering support for human capital development.
She also thanked the governor’s wife, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, for their steadfast support of social intervention projects.
